Four Stages to Leash-Free Walks
Free consultation
Tell Rikki where your dog struggles today and what freedom you’d like to have together. She’ll answer your questions and point you to the program that fits.
Foundation on the leash
Heel, sit, down, place and a solid recall on the leash come first, so your dog understands every command before any freedom is added.
Freedom in the real world
Step by step, your dog practices without the leash around people, dogs and everyday distractions, with desensitization to the triggers that used to win.
Handoff and follow-up
At pickup, Rikki coaches you on handling your dog and using the e-collar. A later follow-up session checks that the recall works for you too.
Recall on a Good Day vs. Every Day
These are the changes owners usually want when they come to us for off-leash training. Every dog is different, and practice at home keeps them going.
Life right now
- Your dog bolts through an open door
- Recall works only with a treat in hand
- The leash never comes off outside
- Squirrels and dogs win every time
- Pulling hard the second you clip on
- Jumps on people who stop to say hi
- You chase your dog around the yard
Life after off-leash training
- Holds a wait at the open door
- Comes back the first time you call
- Walks at your side, leash or not
- Checks in with you around distractions
- A loose leash whenever it’s on
- Sits politely for a hello
- Your dog stays close and follows you
How the E-Collar Helps Off Leash
When the leash comes off, your dog still needs a clear way to hear you from a distance. That’s a big reason the e-collar is part of advanced off-leash work at Ruff Haus K9. Used the right way, it’s a safe, effective tool with a wide range of adjustable levels.
Rikki pairs the e-collar with exercise, affection and positive reinforcement. Low-level stimulation often has a calming, focusing effect, which helps an excited dog tune back in to you instead of the squirrel across the field.
- Every session starts at zero
- Low, humane settings matched to your dog
- Raised only when your dog needs it
- Always alongside play, praise and rewards
- You learn exactly how the tool works

Which Program Builds Off-Leash Skills?
Off-leash reliability is built mainly through our longer board and train programs. Some families start with private lessons at home to lay the groundwork. Rikki will suggest the path that suits your dog.
2-week board and train
The foundation: obedience, coming when called, leash and door manners and socialization. A strong base to build off-leash work on later.
3-week board and train
Advanced obedience and off-leash freedom, with daily practice in parks and busy stores so the recall holds up away from home.
4 weeks or longer
Extra time for dogs that also need help with anxiety, reactivity or other behavior concerns before the leash comes off.
Private in-home lessons
One-on-one lessons at your home to build the foundation: on-leash obedience, recall basics and reading your dog’s body language, with you doing the handling.
Can Any Dog Learn to Work Off Leash?
Many dogs can, from small terriers to big working breeds. How far your dog gets depends on age, temperament, energy level, history and how consistently you keep up the training at home. A dog with a strong chase drive or a lot of anxiety may need more time before the leash comes off, and that’s okay.
Off-leash training isn’t about letting your dog run wild. It’s about a dog that chooses to stay with you, keeps an eye on you and responds when you call, even when something more exciting is going on. That freedom is best used in places where it’s allowed and safe, and Rikki will talk you through what that looks like for your dog.
During the free consultation, Rikki gives you an honest picture of where your dog is today and what it will take. Training programs start at 5 months of age.
When Your Dog Needs a Stronger Recall
If any of these sound familiar, your dog is a good candidate for off-leash training with Ruff Haus K9:
Proofed Around Real Distractions
A recall that only works in an empty backyard won’t help much when a squirrel bolts across the trail. That’s why off-leash training moves out into the real world: local parks and crowded stores such as Target and Home Depot.
Your dog learns to stay focused around people, carts, noise and other dogs, one level of distraction at a time. For dogs that get worked up by triggers, desensitization training lowers the emotional response, so your dog can think and listen instead of reacting.

Keeping the Recall Sharp at Home
With board and train, the Educator e-collar your dog trained with goes home with you. At pickup, Rikki shows you how to fit it, when to use it and how to keep your dog’s skills sharp, and the follow-up session checks that the recall works with you holding the remote.
A few simple habits keep the tool safe and comfortable: the two-finger fit, putting it on only when you’re with your dog, taking it off at night and clipping the leash to a separate collar or harness. If questions pop up later, you can reach out by phone or email, during the program and after it.

Off-Leash Training Questions
Can dogs be trained to be off leash?
Yes, many dogs can learn reliable off-leash skills. It starts with a strong foundation on the leash, then freedom is added step by step around real distractions. Your dog’s age, temperament and your consistency at home all play a part, and Rikki will tell you honestly what to expect for your dog.
Should I send my dog away for off-leash training?
It’s a good option for many dogs. In board and train, your dog stays with Rikki’s family and team, trains daily and gets plenty of exercise and affection, and pictures and videos of the progress reach you three times a week. You learn every skill at pickup, so the freedom carries over to you.
How long does off-leash training take?
Off-leash freedom is a focus of our 3-week and 4-week board and train programs, which build on the foundation of the 2-week program. Some dogs need longer, especially if anxiety or reactivity is part of the picture. Rikki will tell you what’s realistic for your dog.
How much does off leash dog training on Long Island cost?
There’s no single number, because every dog starts from a different place. The total depends on the program your dog needs, and with board and train the e-collar is part of the package. Once Rikki has met your dog through the free consultation, she lays out the options and gives you an exact quote.
Is the e-collar safe for my dog?
Yes, when it’s used responsibly. Every session begins at zero, the level rises only as far as your dog needs, and the settings stay gentle and suited to your dog’s sensitivity. You learn exactly how the tool works before you use it on your own.
Can private lessons help with off-leash training?
They can build the foundation: on-leash obedience, recall basics and reading your dog’s body language, practiced at home with you as the handler. Full off-leash reliability is built mainly through our longer board and train programs, where your dog practices every day in real places.
Will my dog come back to me, not only the trainer?
That’s the goal of the go-home lesson. You practice each cue with your own dog, by voice and by hand, plus the e-collar, until it feels natural, and a follow-up session later makes sure your dog answers to you. Regular practice keeps the recall reliable.
