How Day Training Works on Long Island
Free consultation
Explain what your dog does now and what you’d like to see instead. Rikki answers your questions, makes sure day training suits your dog and sets a schedule around your dog and your week.
Drop off in Kings Park
On your training days, you drop your dog off in Kings Park and head to work, errands or whatever your day holds.
Your dog trains
Your dog spends the day working on obedience, manners and the specific problems you raised, following a plan made for your dog alone.
Pick up and head home
At the end of the day you collect your dog. Rikki shows you what your dog worked on and how to keep it going, and then the two of you go home together.
Three Ways to Train With Ruff Haus K9
All three programs use the same method and start with the same free consultation. What changes is where your dog spends its time and how much of the training you do yourself.
Board and Train
Your dog stays and trains on site for 2 to 4 weeks, or longer, which gives it the most time with a professional in one go.
Day Training
The middle ground. Your dog spends the day learning from Rikki and her team, then comes home with you each evening.
Private In-Home Lessons
Your trainer visits your house and coaches you one-on-one, so you learn to work with your dog right in the rooms and on the street where the problems show up.
Trained by Day, Home by Night
With day training, your dog’s normal life stays in place. The training happens with Rikki and her team, and the evenings still belong to you, with the usual walk, dinner and your dog’s own spot to sleep.
That rhythm has a quiet advantage. Every evening shows you what your dog is learning in the place where it matters most, your own house. Small wins turn up at the front door, in the kitchen and on the walk around the block, one training day at a time.
It also keeps the relationship with your dog front and center. You stay part of your dog’s routine the whole way through, so the progress feels shared from the very first day.

Who Day Training Suits Best
Rikki recommends a program once she knows your dog, but day training tends to fit owners and dogs like these.
Your family can’t be apart from your dog
Some dogs would miss home too much, and some households can’t picture weeks without their dog. Day training gives you professional help with no long goodbye.
Your schedule is packed
Long workdays leave little time to train. Your dog spends the day learning with professionals instead of waiting for you to get home.
Your puppy is ready to learn
Puppies old enough for a training program can build good habits early, while a professional handles the repetition young dogs need.
Your dog is sweet but won’t listen
Obedience and nuisance behaviors are the heart of day training, so it fits the friendly dog that simply hasn’t learned the rules yet.
Skills Built Day by Day
Each training day builds on the one before. Rikki and her team focus on the core obedience that makes everyday life with a dog easier, plus the manners your household cares about most.
Training doesn’t stay in one quiet spot either. Outings to Long Island parks and busy stores help your dog keep listening around strangers, shopping carts and other dogs. These are the skills a day training plan can include.
- Loose-leash walks and a solid heel
- Sit and down, plus a longer stay
- A reliable recall when you call
- Leave it, out, off and place
- Polite greetings and door manners
- Crate and potty routines
- Focus and socialization out in public

One Dog, One Plan
Whether you bring in a tiny pup or a large working breed, Rikki reads your dog’s energy, how it reacts to being handled and what its body language tells her, then builds the plan from there. Every dog ends up with its own.
Her approach mixes plenty of exercise and affection with positive reinforcement and e-collar training. The collar offers many adjustable levels. Rikki starts from zero each time and turns it up only if it’s needed, keeping it at a low, humane setting chosen for this particular dog’s temperament. At those low levels, many dogs find the stimulation focusing, and calming too.
Rikki explains how the tool works in plain terms, along with the habits that keep it fair. Leave room for two fingers under the strap, use it only when you’re there to supervise, remove it at bedtime and attach the leash to a different collar or a harness.

Keeping the Training Going at Home
Day training gives your dog the professional repetitions. The results last when the same rules carry on in the evenings and on the days your dog isn’t training. Owners play an active part, and keeping up the work at home is what makes it stick.
Short practice sessions fit easily into a normal day. Ask for a place while you cook, a heel for the first stretch of your walk and a leave it when something hits the floor. Pick one word for each command and have the whole family use it.
Questions will come up, and that’s expected. You can call or email Rikki while your dog is in training and after it wraps up.

Day Training Questions
Which days can I drop my dog off, and at what times?
The schedule is set on your free consultation, built around your dog and your week. Rikki talks through how many training days make sense and when drop-off and pickup work for your family.
How much does day training cost on Long Island?
That depends on your dog, how many training days make sense and what you want to work on. Every program is customized, so the total differs from dog to dog. Once Rikki has gotten to know your dog on your free consultation, she explains what fits and gives you a precise quote.
Is it okay to send my dog away for training?
For most dogs, yes. With day training, your dog never has to stay away overnight. If your dog would do well with a longer stay and you want the most time with a professional, board and train is another option. Rikki evaluates every dog and recommends the program that fits.
Can I bring my puppy to day training?
Yes, once your puppy is at least 5 months old. Have a younger pup? Contact us all the same, and Rikki will plan a starting point that suits your puppy.
Do you take aggressive dogs for day training?
Rikki takes on slight to moderate aggression, not severe cases, and she evaluates every dog first. Owners sometimes describe a dog as aggressive when it really isn’t, and some cases need a different specialist. Please share any bite history on your consultation. Aggression is worked on throughout training, and every dog progresses at its own pace.
What does my dog need before day training starts?
Your dog needs current distemper, parvo, rabies, leptospirosis and bordetella vaccines. Bordetella given by nose or mouth has to be done at least three days before training begins, and an injected bordetella shot at least ten days before. Please send the records ahead of your dog’s first training day.
Where do you offer dog day training on Long Island?
Day training takes place in Kings Park. Ruff Haus K9 serves families across Suffolk and Nassau counties, and Kings Park is a short drive from towns like Smithtown, Commack, Northport, Huntington and Hauppauge.
